Personal Philosophy on Dental Care

Recently, a peer asked me why I am so passionate about dentistry. It helped to crystallize and put in print a practice philosophy that is recited to a reflected image of self regularity.

Every patient should be offered the highest quality of dento-facial treatment options consistent with the possibly unrealized portrait, health and dental needs and their own values.

Service, quality, commitment to excellence and an artistic passion are compelling principles to which I pursue the goal simply to help each patient restore and retain their teeth for life if possible in maximum comfort, function, health and aesthetics both in facial proportions and smile; a portrait of their own beauty and well-being.

We are each destined for certain tasks, that if not done may always go just undone. While growing up, the idea of helping others and being responsible for actions and choices were taught by my parents. My doodlings were therapeutic and better than just stick figures. The team physician, Dr. J.T., Reeves, was a role model. There was a dentist also in my early years who not only made the mouthpieces for our team, but also brought terrifying memories of dental appointments. Never would I have imagined I would enter the profession of dentistry. When I grew up I was going to be a cowboy, later a pilot, a pediatrician.

The health field was my pursuit, even after the loss of my mother close to my entering my freshman college days. She was 39; how could the doctors let this happen to someone who just suffered bad headaches, dizziness and vertigo, earaches? During the end of undergraduate years, I watched as a friend preparing for a dental aptitude exam labored with carving a block of wax to certain dimensions. Within minutes and with only a pin knife, appearing in my hands was an adequate representation. "Maybe I should be a dentist!"

Dental school was an adventure; but it was fun with constant challenges and left a desire for more knowledge. Upon completion of dental school, my goal was to the best general dentist possible. It often seemed more money was being spent on continuing education programs and travel than was being made in the early practice years. Luck would have it that I would become the associate of K.O. King. This association was also an integral part of my passion for dentistry. My attitude and confidence in my talents initially made me overlook the experience, knowledge, and the abilities of this man who would become my mentor. New materials and techniques of bonding were becoming available in dentistry that I am proud to say I helped pioneer for more natural, conservative, and aesthetic restorations and results. The pursuit of more knowledge in implants, occlusion, orthodontics, and cranio-facial pain/dysfunction put me in contact with many of the leaders in the field of dentistry.  At an facial orthopedic symposium, President Kennedy's former White House physician, Dr. Janet Travell, was describing patients that were as my own mother. The fire was intensified.

My passion for drawing faces and that for dentistry had merged. Pretty balanced faces equaled the criteria for health "TMJs" and thus beautiful smiles.

That year I became a founding member of both the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and the American Association of functional Orthodontics, and became a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. Those early associations allowed me to be part of the evolution of state of the art dentistry as the swelling of a tidal wave. Technology and public awareness, and the publics increasing understanding and desires for prettier, healthier smiles has forced the dental profession to accept change. Unfortunately change is never easy nor without complications. Aesthetic dental physicians is a term as foreign in concept as reality. But those who choose to embrace it, can offer what Mother Nature had intended but didn't deliver all the way. There is more to a smile than just the front six teeth. A new standard of dentistry is evolving.

We can no longer diagnosis and treat as the third parties dictate. Their knowledge is in business, their consultants are biased or no longer serve as consultants, their plans are for maintenance and not rehabilitation/enhancements with state of the art dentistry.

About 20 years ago with the urging of a changed, prettier, healthier and pain-free patient; the decision was made "to get the word out". The name Confi-Dent: Appearance Related Dentistry - Appearance-related dentistry was chosen. This described many of the patients as well as the style of dentistry. Confi-Dent: Appearance Related Dentistry remains descriptive. An additional descriptor has been added to include my choice to become even more personally involved. My art form is now the design and enhancement of smiles using a porcelain substrate sculpted under a surgical microscope. Thus Confi-Dent: Appearance Related Dentistry/Aesthetic Oral Arts Perfection Studio, Smiles designed and enhanced by Dr. jgReddick.

It is the choice of each patient to have that captivating smile and confidence noticed upon entering a room. It is their mouth/smile that is on display to the world. Diagnosis and treatment planning is thought out as if it were for my own circumstances. I will not compromise treatment, but can offer feasible provisional treatment alternatives in pursuit of the big picture and goal without putting expensive dentistry on a poor foundation.

It is good to know what each patient expects of me as their dentist. How they wish to be treated by myself and the competent and well-trained staff is of great concern. From the initial phone call and subsequent appointments, the patient's comfort is important, because the patient is most important.

Providing adequate appointments, being on time and never being rushed; re-appoint as necessary for patient comfort as well as getting the job done correctly are but a few of the ways we try to make the process conducive for ideal individualized treatment. For some patients where longer appointments are desired for time management or apprehension, sleep dentistry is as safe and easy as taking a couple of small blue pills and is a logical choice. Massage pads for the chairs, warm blankets are available at all appointments upon request, as well as warm moist towels at the end of scheduled appointments.

Shopping for the least expensive dentistry can be very expensive and make your face snarl in the long run. Shopping for some of the best dentistry available in the world today can be a bargain and make you smile.
